In an east-meets-west entrepreneurial endeavor, two-time Emmy award-winning executive producer and Boston-based entertainment and lifestyle television personality, Jenny Johnson, has teamed up with Penny Gadd-Coster, executive director of winemaking at Rack & Riddle in Healdsburg, CA, to create Champy, a Sonoma County sparkling wine that celebrates life—and the hard work that goes into it.

Johnson, who has been steering the people of Boston and greater New England toward choice dining and drinking experiences for more than a decade through her work as a two-time Emmy Award-winning producer and television host (“Dining Playbook” and “TV Diner”) is now turning local imbibers on to her own brand of brut.

A genuine lover of bubbly, Johnson has always been attracted to the celebratory spirit that revolves around sparkling wine and its ability to spontaneously transform an ordinary moment into an extraordinary one. But, as Johnson points out, people are no longer waiting for momentous occasions to celebrate. “Champy is about celebrating moments both big and small. Champy is a chardonnay and pinot noir blend produced in Sonoma County, CA. Its sparkle is derived from the traditional method of fermentation, also known as the méthode champenoise, in which a secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle.

“Sonoma is a special area that is really great for making sparkling wine,” said Gadd-Coster, who oversees Champy’s production. She explains that because Sonoma’s climate is a little warmer than France’s Champagne region, the wines from this area develop fruitier flavors. “It’s really easy to keep a bottle in your fridge, pop it open every day, and enjoy a glass,” she says. “It makes you feel special.”
